We think that John William Green was a former pupil at North Primary School. He was born in London and joined the army in 1909. In 1911 he was with the Royal Field Artillery in South Africa while the rest of his family lived in St Peter’s Street, Colchester.
In 1916 John was injured in France, receiving a gunshot wound to his thigh. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for his action when he “worked a gun under heavy concentrated fire within 200yards of the enemy trenches.”
