Arthur Andrews was born in Bideford in Devon and returned to Devon in his retirement from teaching before his death in 1958. He trained to be a teacher at Bornigh Road Teacher Training College in Middlesex and was teaching at North School in 1906 at the same time as Mr Mirrington and Mr Ashby. In May 1916 he joined the London Electrical Engineers. He injured his back on service in England in 1917 and was discharged as medically unfit. When he returned to North School in April 1919 he was attending hospital for injuries to his back, arms and shoulders. Former pupil Henry Collins remembers that Mr Andrews was responsible for his attendance at Colchester Art School for one afternoon a week. Henry went on to have a successful career as an artist.
