Claude Abbott (1891 – 1915) was born in St Mary’s Road, Colchester and enrolled at North School by his father Walter. The family moved to Ardleigh in 1897 where Walter opened a butchers shop but Claude continued at North School until 1905. During the war Claude was a private in the 1st Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps. He was killed in Gallipoli aged 24 when he was hit by shrapnel in no man’s land after volunteering to go out and help a wounded comrade.
Claude is buried in Beach Cemetery, Anzac, Turkey and is remembered on his mother Sarah Abbott’s headstone.
