Fred Arnold (1887 – 1918) was enrolled at North School when his family lived at 44 Crowhurst Road. By 1911 Fred had moved to 128 Magdalen Street, Colchester where he worked in the family coach building business. George Marshall, Fred’s father employed three of his eldest sons in the business as a coachbuilder, coachsmith and learning coach builder.
Fred was married in 1911 to Maud E Pettit, a tailor from Colchester and they lived at 34 West Street.
Fred served in the Mechanical Transport Company in the Army Service Corps and died aged 31 in Iraq in 1918. He is buried in Basra War Cemetery.
