George Burgess

George Burgess (1894 – 1914) was born in Ipswich but the family moved to Colchester sometime after 1901 and George was entered for school from 44 Bergholt Road.  He left in 1909.

In 1911 George worked as a bookstall clerk for WH Smith and son, and lived with his family at 39 Mile End Road.  He joined the 2nd Essex Regiment and arrived in France on 24 August 1914.  He died two months later on 14 October 1914 from his wounds in a clearing hospital.  He is buried in Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, France where his headstone reads “Rest in the Lord”.
