Alfred Dansey

Alfred Dansey (1894 – 1916) attended North School until 1908 living at 5 Short Cut Road.  By 1911 Alfred’s father had died, the family had moved to 64 Northgate Street and Alfred had a job as a newspaper boy.

Alfred joined the 11th Essex Regiment.  In October 1916 he was admitted to a Red Cross hospital but died there of his wounds.  He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.  Many hospitals and camps were based in Etaples during the war as it was away from the front lines and easily accessible by rail.

The inscription on Alfred’s headstone, chosen by his mother Sarah, reads “Gone but not forgotten.”

Alfred is also remembered on the roll of honour in St Peter’s Church on North Hill.
