Hylliard Double

Hylliard Double (1896 – 1915) was living in Colchester Union when he started at North School. His father Joseph had had a fishmonger shop at Sheregate Passage, but was widowed in 1900 with 9 children. Joseph died in 1901 which may explain why Hylliard was living in the workhouse.

By 1911 he had joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers as a Bandsman and was living in Aldershot. He left with the battalion for Gallipoli in March 1915, arriving in April. He died of his wounds in Gallipoli in August 1915 and is buried in the Chatby War Memorial Cemetery in Egypt.
