George Gibson

George Gibson (1893 – 1914) was born in Thorpe le Soken but attended North School when his widowed mother Elizabeth lived and worked as a housekeeper at 32 Northgate Street.

George joined the Essex Regiment, giving his profession as a painter. In 1911 he was based at Warley Barracks in Essex.

He arrived in France on 22nd August 1914 and was promoted to Lance Corporal but was killed in action in Belgium on 24th November 1914. George is buried in the Calvaire (Essex) Military Cemetery which is an example of a regimental cemetery, started in November 1914 by the 2nd Essex and other regiments. He is remembered on the St Peter’s Church roll of honour (North Hill).
