Leonard Hales

Leonard Hales (1892 – 1915) lived at 26 Myland Road. He joined North School from a previous school in Edmonton and returned to Edmonton to work as a cart washer in a brewery. His father George worked as Brewers Drayman so perhaps they worked together.

Leonard became a Lance Corporal in the Grenadier Guards, enlisting at St Paul’s Church and arriving in France on 24th May 1915. He was killed in action in October 1915.

He is buried in Vermelles Cemetery where his headstone reads:
Greater love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends (R.I.P)
