Herbert Nevard

Bertie Nevard (1892 – 1916) lived at 40 Bergholt Road with his family when he went to North School.

Bertie, or Herbert, joined the 1st Grenadier Guards in August 1914. He was described as 5ft 9inches tall, brown hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion.

He arrived in France in March 1915, staying eight months until October when he returned home. He was sent back to France in June 1916 and died in action in September aged 24. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France and at home on the St Paul’s Church roll of honour now displayed at St James the Great, East Hill.
