Horace Quilter

Horace Quilter (1896 – 1916) was born in Camden, London. He was living in Colchester Union when he joined North School but in 1911 was living with his family at 2 Quaker’s Court West Stockwell Street so perhaps his stay at the workhouse was short.

Horace joined the Royal Navy in March 1914. He joined the crew of HMS Russell in May 1915 and remained with the ship until his death in April 1916 when it hit mines off Malta. His body was not recovered for burial. He was 20 years old.

Horace is remembered in the Chatham Memorial Naval register.
