Claude Rooney (1888 – 1918 ) was born in Colchester and lived with his parents and 7 siblings at 23 Albert Street. In 1911 Claude was working as a fishmonger and poulterers manager. In 1912 Claude married Ethel Cudmore.
Claude joined the Coldstream Guards and became a Lance Corporal. He died in action on 27th September 1918 when the Guards stormed a German fortification. He is buried on the battlefield in Sanders Keep Military cemetery, France.
Claude is also remembered on the roll of honour in St Peters Church on North Hill.
